5 Times the Theremin Made a Song Rock

Theremin Instrument

The theremin is definitely one of the most bizarre and intriguing instruments ever created.

The often eerie sound is most notably used in sci-fi genre films like 1950s classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Thing from Another World.

But in my opinion, the theremin deserves more recognition for this presence in some of today’s badass indie and classic rock music. So, let’s talk about it!

But first, you may be wondering what it is.

What is the Theremin?

This fantastic instrument was invented in the early 1920s by a Soviet engineer named Leon Theremin.

When you first observe someone playing the instrument, it almost seems like a magic trick because the musician never actually touches it. Instead they hold their hands inches above the instrument and wave them back-and-forth between two antennas to manipulate electromagnetic fields.

Actually, one hand moves back-and-forth to control the pitch, while the other moves up and down to control volume.

Now let’s check out some of the songs!

Great Songs that Use the Theremin

5. Portishead – “Mysterons”

The sound of the theremin is very prominent in this song, as you’ll hear it right away in the intro.

4. The White Stripes – “Little People”

Again, this unique instrument is heard right from the beginning in this song in a high-pitch squeal that almost reminds me of the sound of a humpback whale singing.

3. The Pixies – “Velouria”

In this song you can hear the theremin sound alongside singer Black Francis as he sings.

2. The Rolling Stones – “Please Go Home”

In this song the theremin is most prominent at about 1:30 in.

1. The Beach Boys – “Good Vibrations”

Lastly, this song has one of the most iconic uses of the theremin. Everyone knows this song and the instrument first kicks in heavy at approximately 25-seconds in.

In closing, does the theremin deserve to be featured more in today’s music? Yes!

I also think it will be as new generations experiment with sounds looking for something to help them stand out with fans.
