How to Write a Song: Deconstructing the Elements

how to write a song

So you’re ready to write a song, but perhaps you don’t know where to start. That’s a common problem for new songwriters, and we’re here to help. The best method for songwriting is to work on pieces of the song one by one.  There is no set rule on which part of the song you tackle first (lyrics, melody, riffs) when learning how to write a rock song.  However, we’ve provided a guideline below to get you started. You can then tailor the process to your preference. Together we will deconstruct the elements that come together to create the perfect rock song.

The Riff

One of the most defining parts of any rock song is its opening riff. This is because it’s the first thing that’s going to grab the listener’s attention. It’s going to either get them to commit to hearing the song, or cause them to scroll to another song on their playlist.  Often end up being the most recognizable part of a song. Perfect examples are “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult, or “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. You’ll notice when you start researching other opening riffs, that they are often insanely simple – a few cords or short note sequence repeating over and over again.

Catchy Melodies

Melodies are created when musical notes are in a way that is pleasing to the ear. They are easy to remember, and in fact, can get stuck in your head for hours.

When writing a melody, try to focus on something that uses smaller musical intervals and is easily repeated. Great examples are “Africa” by Toto, “More than a Feeling” by Boston, or “Keep on Loving You” by REO Speedwagon.

Instrument Solos

No discussion on how to write rock songs would be complete without including a solo. This is usually the guitar, but many epic rock songs have drum or piano solos as well. The solo serves as the centerpiece or emotional climax of the song. In many instances, it also allows the musician to show off a bit. Some of the most iconic rock solos include “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Practicing your favorite rock solos is the best way to gain inspiration for your own! Chord Progressions

Rock songs often rely on basic chord structures, such as the I-IV-V progression. This is the most commonly used. However, experimentation is key here. Try to find something that sounds familiar, yet at the same time is unique.

You also want to try to strike emotion – whether it’s celebratory, angry, lovestruck, or whatever. This site here has some excellent examples of chord progressions in famous songs.

Lyrics

No rock song would be complete without its lyrics. Song lyrics often tell a story, whether it’s reflecting on a social issue, tackling love, or leading a rebellion. The meaning of the lyrics can also be mysterious, allowing the audience to come up with their meaning for the song. Pink Floyd is known for doing this with their songs – the audience is often left wondering what the song is about. Or let us not forget about “I Am the Walrus” by The Beatles. What’s important is that the lyrics fit your song and your audience.

Song Structure

The structure refers to the arrangement of the different elements of your song. Songs typically include verses, a chorus, a bridge, and sometimes instrumental breaks. All of these song elements come together to build a journey for the listener. It’s important to listen to as many classic rock songs as possible to gain an understanding of how all the elements fit together. You’ll start to understand how many verses you need (usually around 4), or how long the chorus should be (typically 8 bars).

The key to how to write a song for beginners or pros is to experiment with your sound. Find out who you are, and what makes your creativity unique.

I hope this general guideline helps you get on the right track for how to write a song. Good luck and happy songwriting!
